Where they get in

  • Under the deck. The most common den site on an Edmonton property: dry, sheltered and easy to dig into.
  • Under a shed or steps. Same appeal, less obvious, and usually found by smell before sight.
  • Screening afterwards. The gap gets closed properly, dug in at the edge, or the space is simply advertised to the next one.
  • Timing matters. We check for young before anything is closed, for their sake and to avoid a far worse problem in the cavity.

Handled carefully, this is uncommon. A skunk sprays when it is cornered or startled, so the work is done in a way that leaves the animal an obvious way out and never backs it into anything. That is a large part of why this is not a job to attempt with a broom and a garden hose.

No, and we will not do it. Sealing a deck or a shed with an animal still underneath leaves it to die in a space you cannot reach, which is inhumane and leaves you with a smell that lasts weeks and cannot be cleaned out. Everything is confirmed empty before anything is closed.

Screening the perimeter is what actually prevents it, and it has to close the gap at ground level rather than sit on top of it. A skunk under a deck got there through a specific opening, and the space is attractive because it is dry, dark and enclosed. Closing the opening removes the reason to come back, which removing the animal on its own does not.
